Thank you for an AMAZING teacher appreciation week! We feel so loved and appreciated. We love and appreciate all of you, thanks for a great year!
Field Day was scheduled for this Tuesday, May 14th from 8:45-10:45 it has been moved to next Tuesday, May 20th from 8:45-10:45 am due to this crazy spring snow! Please feel free to join us and make sure your child is wearing proper attire for the day (sunscreen, hat, water bottle, etc)!
Assessments are almost finished, we are so proud of all the growth your children have made this year. We are simply amazed with how fast the year has gone, the students are really starting to look like third graders. In fact, next Monday they will go up to 3rd grade and meet the teachers! We will be very sad but know that this is part of being a teacher. It is bittersweet...yikes!!!Goals for this week:
Science –
-Students discover what happens to a forest when the demand for wood is greater than the supply and then graph their results.
-Students observe a demonstration of how much water is available on the planet for human consumption.
-Students investigate how much water they use in their lives, both directly and indirectly.
-After matching everyday products to their rock or mineral sources, students "mine" chocolate chip cookies to discover the impacts of many mining operations.
-Students desiring to draw renewable resources from a common pool determine short-term consumption strategies that will preserve a long-term supply of the resource for all.
-Students construct a word web to show the possible cause and effect relationships of a growing population.
-In groups, students consider several environmental and social dilemmas and discuss the consequences of various reactions.
Technology-
-Waterford Reading Program
-IXL
-Pebble Go
-Brain Pop Jr.
-Google Site Development
-iPod math games
-Publish writing using MS Word
-Everyday Math Games
-National Geographic for Kids
-TCI Social Studies
-Kidspiration
-Animoto
-Discovery Education
-Discovery Ed TechBook
Math
-Review reading times in different ways, show time to the nearest five minutes on a clock face, and calculate times
-Events on a timeline
-Review and extend shortcuts and strategies for learning multiplication facts; practice multiplication facts
-Review multiplication/division fact families, investigate the relationship between multiplication and division

Dear Families,
Busy? Yes! We really have a lot going on and we are super excited to finish so many things that we started this year!
First, thank you to Dan Szabo who presented what Geocaching was and then took us all outside to learn how it is actually done. The students created their own cache, learned how to use a GPS on a phone, read the longitude and latitude locations of the cache, where and what a cache as in it, how to treat it and how to enjoy it! It was really educational and always a pleasure to have a parent share their knowledge!
This Tuesday, May 7th we are expecting FOX 31 News to come to our Community Garden!!! There is the possibility that other media will be present also on our "Planting Day"!!! We are hoping that O'Toole's delivers 8 of our benches that day, that we get the mulch spread out among the 3 trees, that we unload and pack some more breese in the pathways, get our fountain up and plant flowers around it, plant our strawberries in a pallet garden, and of course plant our 6 raised beds!!! We are hoping that the t-shirts come in tomorrow also and would appreciate if you can send in your $7 so that we all match on Tuesday and then again on the last day of school.
Assessments were amazing, gratifying and humbling! We love your children and couldn't be more proud! As you know the next 2 weeks will be full of testing so please remember to try not to have too many appointments for your child before our year is over! We will share with you the results as we wrap it up!
On Thursday, May 8th after school we will be cleaning up the trail from 119th to 112th and the Wyco Park. Thank you to Brenda Patricolo who helped make this happen. It is something that has been desired for a few years!!! We will be putting out a sign up to keep it cleaned up throughout the summer. Then, next year's 2nd Graders will be on board. This is a great community service and aligns with our entire school year! We will send home a form on Monday and would love to have parents volunteer to take groups of 4-5 students for parents that cannot come. Please let us know asap.
Also, we will be sending home a permission slip for the students' last PBL that will be hosted at TriState Generation & Transmission. The day will be extended for some since we will be going over and presenting in shifts! Our means of transportation is a LIMO with a quick stop afterwards at Dairy Queen!!! This has been made possible by Brenda Patricolo also. She has arranged with her work for the students to present in front of a panel of staff from her work, the Limo donation and getting Dairy Queen to donate to our children! Can you say...AMAZING!!! We are so excited and will be working on our Natural Resources PBL for the next 2 weeks!!!
Lastly, a big congratulations to all of our students who participated in the Lion's Club Relay this Sunday! 2nd grade rocked it!!!

Hello Families,
Phew!! It has been a wild ride this week. The Sustainability Fair was a huge success! Our booth earned over $200. for the Prairie Dog Coalition!!!! http://www.humanesociety.org/about/departments/prairie_dog_coalition/index.html The pet rocks were an enormous success and we have some ideas to make them even more appealing for next year's event....you will just have to come to the Sustainability Fair next year to check it out! Second graders rock!!!
Wednesday the earth started to move....literally. We had loads and loads of top soil, compost, mulch, breese, and fill dirt transported by an "army" of folks with pickups. Even Mrs. Tellinger brought a load of breese over from Pioneer Landscaping for us. Mr. Donald Keim has been hauling and working out there every day; we could not have gotten this done without his tireless help. Thank you so very much for all your efforts!
Our garden work day was amazing and we hope that you felt as empowered and we do with this amazing Community Outreach. It is an amazing thing to think about...all of us working toward the same goal, the goal to GIVE!!! Loved the help, loved the day, and love the project. We will have a couple of more days where we will need to work on the garden during or after school to finish it up. We will keep you posted. Please send your child prepared. We never know when someone will come and deliver rock, or ? so we want to be prepared. We sent home a note that says that you will give us permission to take your child over to the garden and work. We need this as a type of insurance policy just in case someone got hurt. Please take a moment to go back by the tennis courts and see all of the efforts. We estimate that we had 100-150 people at least working and enjoying the day together. We have a couple of things left to do! We would love for you to purchase your child's t-shirt (possibly one for you too) for our Grand Opening and think about donating a bit to our efforts. We are short about $2,000 for the fence and more benches for our outdoor classroom that we would like to have. Any family that donates $50 or more will get your last name engraved on an acrylic leaf that will placed along the fence line. We are hoping that we can get a fence before our Red Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on the last day of school!
Thank you to all who came to the Orchard Town Center's AMC to watch Bears with us! It was so spectacular and the photography was just amazing! We hope you had as much fun as we did!
This Thursday we have Dan Szabo coming in to teach us how to Geocache! We have done this for the last 2 years and it really teaches students about longitude and latitude, what GPS really is and the recreation of Geocaching in Colorado and around the world. We are in need of small check book size boxes by Tuesday to help with this event so they can work in teams to decorate it for another team to find it. Each team of 5 will get to hide their Geocache and find another teams! It is truly a remarkable event!
Many of you have signed up for this Friday's Assessment Day, May 2nd, but we have many that have not.
Please refer to calendar on website for all the events as the year comes to an end. Many may change do to unforseen circumstances.
As always....
Thank you!

What week it was...thank you to all that came to our Farm to Table event that was at NGHS last Wednesday! Special thanks to Joy Boon and Tracey Calderon for coming early to help set up too! Our evening was a success and we were very proud of all the work the students have done regarding our garden; from our planning, to our Google Sketch Ups, and to our Haiku Decks that they created for their garden PBL! We had origami, planting, tissue paper flowers, etc. It was quite a sight! Also, thanks to the Pennington and Conway family who stayed and helped us clean up our display!
Congratulations to all our 2nd Graders regarding their amazing performance for our Conservation Musical!!! So many families came and we truly appreciate your patience with the change of time, etc. The play is an important part of being a STEM student and taking care of our Earth! We hope you learned something and do something a little bit different in your life to help protect and preserve our Earth! The play was just spectacular and we can't wait to see the DVD that High Plains Video Production will produce. If you are interested in a copy, they are $20 and the money is due by this Friday, April 25th! Remember we get a kick back of $4 per video if we get 20 of the DVD's ordered. We will have order forms available and post one on our website. We will keep you posted on arrival date of the DVD's! It typically takes about 2 weeks. They will be delivered here at the school and then we will distribute! Thank you to all that ordered already!!!
Upcoming!!! If you ordered tickets for the "Disneynature's BEARS" movie at the AMC Orchard Town Center in Westminster on Sunday, April 27th with the show starting at 12:30 pm we would love for you to pick up your tickets Monday after school by the east doors where you typically pick up your child. Joy Boon has volunteered to pass out tickets. If you are unable to pick up your tickets after school, please let us know how and when you would like to pick them up before Sunday....they are perforated and we don't want the students to accidentally detach the ticket. The ticket is for general admission and it is first come first seated. Holding seats are not permitted and this is not a private screening so they advise us to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to our show time. The ticket is non-refundable/nonexchangeable and cannot be replaced if lost or stolen. All tickets for this program have been sold in advance. You will not be able to purchase tickets on the day of the event at the theatre. If the theatre makes an exception, they may not offer the advanced pricing. We want to thank you for choosing to attend and celebrate our Earth and all of it's beauty in yet another way!
Also, our 4th Annual Sustainability Fair will be on Earth Day this Tuesday, April 22nd from 5-7 pm. Your child has made painted rock photo holders and up-cycled notebooks. All grade levels are participating, plus we will have other "green" vendors. Please sign up to help on the SignUp Genius for this event to help us work our booth. All proceeds will go to the Prairie Dog Coalition to save land for one of our keystone species.
Attention...Attention...all parents and families we need everyone to donate a piece of next Saturday, April 26th! We will be there with Home Depot and many others putting together our garden! From laying the patio for our outdoor classroom, laying pave stones for our walkways, shoveling soil and digging fence post holes... WE NEED YOU!!! Please sign up at http://communitygardenorganization.weebly.com/ to help us complete, work, and enjoy our Community Garden that has been named ...Paradise Gardens! Second Grade Newsletter 4/6/2014
Thank you for such a successful week! We got the sod cut and the students rolled and loaded the dump trailer full of sod!!! Our Community Garden is underway! We had a parent meeting which many of you attended...thank you! To keep up to date on what is happening, what we have and what we need please refer to http://communitygardenorganization.weebly.com/ We are open to ideas, help and anything in between! We are really planning for the students plants to be in the garden by the last week of this month. Also, we hope you heard about the guest speaker we had Alan Richardson a Master Gardener from CSU! He taught us more about gardening, their tools, and the need for a garden. Hultrom and STEM Lab are working deligently to make all of this happen and will be meeting again this Monday to get more plans in motion.
This week we will have Parent Teacher Conferences on Thursday and Friday. We are eager to meet with you to talk about your precious child. Don't forget to knock on our door if we go over the time limit. We want to stay as close to the schedule as possible.
Also, on Thursday we have a Dental Health presentation planned for our students. Please remember there is no school on Friday for your child since we will be meeting with Parents for Conferences.
We are still in need for 4-5 families from each room to come with us to the Farm to Table event sponsored through the City of Thornton and funded from SCFD. It is Wed. April 16th from 6:30-8:30 pm and we would like the students to talk, present, and demonstrate our PBL regarding our Community Garden. Please let us know if you can bring your child to share their knowledge with others.
Remember too that next Friday, April 18th is our Conservation Play from 6:30-8:00. We would like to have the students here at 6:15 pm. Our performance will be in the large gym and your payment to come in the door is any plastic bags you may have. We have hired a production company also to come and video tape, record, edit, and produce a DVD for you to purchase! This has been a huge success in the past and if we sell 20 DVD's 2nd grade gets a kickback that we use for photo printing for our next project.

Thank you for helping clean the Canal and Greenway! We appreciated all the hard work, we loved giving back to the community as a team! We lost count since we had so many. Last count was around 100 bags filled with trash and debris! Thanks for making a difference and being such a sport on a cold Saturday morning!
Our PBL Presentations were a huge success and the feedback from the panelist was amazing. Haiku Deck ending up being a favorite for the majority of the students for presentation tool. Please check out their hard work on this site. We have tentatively planned with the City of Northglenn to cut the sod out of the area where we will be planing our Community Garden. The date is Tuesday, April 1; so please have your child wear old clothing as they will be rolling sod and hauling it onto a flatbed. Also, if you can bring in some shovels with your name on them that would be helpful. We will then work the land before they rota-till it for our garden. Please mark April 3, on your calendar to attend a garden meeting on how you can help. We will be at Hulstrom from 5:30-6:30 pm. We will also host Alan Richardson a Master Gardener from CSU next week to come to Hulstrom and STEM to teach the children about gardening.
Please remember to read with your child over Spring Break - as well as relax and recharge for our last eight weeks of school (these students are starting to look like third graders)!

Dear 2nd Grade Families and Friends,
We are finding it hard to contain our excitement over the Community Garden Project! This has been a dream of many for the past 4 years and it looks like this is the year that it will happen. We are planning a parent informational meeting jointly with our partner school, Hulstrom, April 3 from 5:30-6:30 to explain what we have been up to, see if you are interested in helping out, and to offer some opportunities to get involved, incluidng what we still need to make it spectacular. Hulstrom is hosting this event. We will let you know which room when their plans are finalized. We hope to see many of you there!
This week has been devoted to the planning and design of the garden, as well as learning two new technological presentation tools, Google SketchUp and Haiku Deck. The students will use their new skills to create presentions for the panel of experts on Thursday at the Northglenn Recreational Center in the theater area. We have also found time to start planting our seeds so that they can be ready once the beds are built and the ground is ready. We are growing in all sorts of ways!!
Tomorrow is the annual Canal Clean-up with the city of Northglenn. For those of you who haven't heard yet, Northglenn has donated the land for the use of our Community Garden. It would be wonderful to express our gratitude for their generosity by helping to make our city a safer and more beautiful place to live with a big turn out on Saturday. Lunch is even provided!! We meet at the Northglenn Recreation Center at 8:30 am and we will have a few extra permission slips available if you find you have a couple of extra hours Saturday morning to lend a hand. They may also be downloaded at home from the calendar tab down at the bottomon this website. Many thanks to those of you who have already signed up! It will be fun!
Students are also trying out this week and next for the Earth Day musical Conservation Play which will be held Friday, April 18th in the large gym at 6:30pm. Announcements for those who will have landed main roles will be made on March 20th. Scripts will be handed out that day so that actors may begin work on their lines over the break.
Parent Conferences will be held on April 10th and 11th this year. Watch for a Sign-Up Genius headed your way soon.
Once again, an enormous thank you to our loyal and wonderful parent volunteers. This program would not be possible without your words of kindness, your loyalty, and you endless support of the teachers and children. An additional shout out to Mrs. Webster for teaching the 2nd grade teachers about aquaponics and all of the assistance she has provided for our future garden adventures! We would also love to thank Steve Bonneau for the ultra-cool and ultra-generous donation of two tower hydroponic gardens for our green houses. The generosity of our STEM community is amazing and makes so many wonderful learning experiences possible. We so appreciate you!

Dear Families and Friends,
What a fantastic learning experience the snow science trip was for our students!! This was a once in a lifetime experience for everyone! Thank you for making this possible for our students! We also want to thank the PTO for covering the additional cost of the trip with a very generous donation. Solar City ( Indira Douglas) also contributed to the cause with a substantial donation to make this trip possible. It truly does take a village to raise our children and support lifelong learners.
Next week we have three guest speakers coming in to enhance our next PBL project. Mr. Marshall is going to teach the students how to use Haiku Deck for their next presentation. Dr. Karen Johnson will be here to talk about gardening and start up procedures for our community garden project. Berry Patch Farms will be here as well to discuss gardening and specific plants for this area. We are also partnering up with the 8th grade to learn how to use Google Sketch Up for our garden blueprints.
Don't forget that we are cleaning up the Canal at Webster Lake from one bridge to the next. Please see forms for permission and bring your family with you! Details are listed below. Please come we don't want to have to it alone! We need YOU!!!
Our next PBL will be held at Northglenn Recreation Center in the theater on March 20th. Students will be presenting to an expert group from City government. The field trip form will be coming out soon. Check for this next week.
Just a reminder.....assignments and dates for activities are found on the calendar and updated weekly.
Have a great week!

Red Apple Recycling began yesterday...what does that mean? Any clothing/shoes/textiles gently used or beyond used are being collected. We earn money back per pound and the money we use pays for A1 Organics that comes to collect our composting efforts. IN addition, there is also prize money for the top school that collect the most poundage. Composting efforts cost a little more that $125 a month. We received a Green UP our Schools grant but that is only $500 for the year! Please help us and clean up our landfills and your home at the same time! Remember, put items in the Red School House!!!

Don’t forget we would like to have you here at 7:15 am on Tuesday and we are wanting to leave at 7:30 am so that we can get our learning started at 9:00 am. We will leave there at approximately at 3:00 ish and will be here by 5:00 pm. Thank you again to our PTO for granting each room monies to defer the cost of this amazing trip and to Indira Douglas who gave our grade a Solar City grant for us to attend. The original price for this trip was $50! Wow...thank you!!!
We will be focusing on our garden for the remainder of the year along with sustainable efforts! We are working with Hulstrom, City of Northglenn, and the Senior Hub Center so far! Please be asking your child about these plans! If you are interested in helping we would love lots of potting soil to start planting seeds next week for our garden in our school under some grow lights.
Also, please mark on calendar Sat. March 15th for donating time to help clean up the canal in Northglenn. Attached is a permission slip to join us. This is a family event and one that 2nd Grade STEM students have traditionally participated in. We would love to see your smiling faces there. Go STEM!!!

Dear Families and Friends,
Spring is just around the corner and with a warming of the weather comes a fervor of activity, both for other living creatures and STEM students! Grades 3-8 will be taking tests very soon and before we know it, the school year will be coming to an end. Second graders have several large projects to complete before we reach May 23rd, so please check the homework site for some important updates.
Our next PBL will be all about our Community Garden. Students will be researching the best plants to grow in our area, creating “blueprints” of the garden layout, and incorporating a number of math standards into their projects. Second grade teachers are hoping to have our Panel of Experts for their PBL presentations at the City of Northglenn government offices; we are working on getting this organized. Additionally, we are collaborating with Hulstrom’s Second Grade and this project will truly be a “Community Project”. It is an extremely busy but very exciting time!
We are just over one week away from the Keystone Snow Science Camp coming up on March 4th! All of the documents you signed earlier for Keystone are fine; we are checking on the bus permission slips to see if those need to be filled out again. Stay tuned!!
We need to add another name to our list of “thank you” shout-outs for the day of PBL presentations. Mrs. Stacey Schmuck came in to volunteer in Ms. Logan’s class and boy, are we so grateful that she did! She helped with many last minute items, as well as with supervision of those who were waiting for their PBL appointments. All of those who come in regularly to assist are SO appreciated. Thank you from the bottoms of our hearts!
Science- Animal Report rubric (see Proficient Writing Sample and Rubrics for Content Areas)

STEM Success "Lynx":
*Fantastic job on all of the PBLs!
How You Can Help?
- Please keep your student reading for 20 minutes every day
- We need 53 2" diameter wood slices, approximately 1/4" thick for nametags for the Keystone experience. We want to wood burn these so they must be to the school by Wednesday. A limb from your yard would be great for this!

Mrs. Tennant and Ms. Logan
Second grade teachers are hoping to have our Panel of Experts at the City of Northglenn government offices; we are working on getting this organized. Dear Families and Friends,
Thank you so much for all the time you put into coming to the students' PBL presentations and staying for our own Valentine's Day celebration afterwards. The food, decorations, and sentimental Valentine's were just lovely! Thank you so very much! We are so proud of your children for all their hard work, dedication, and professionalism. The panelist were so amazed at how the students presented, the wealth of knowledge and their passion and love for the Prairie Dogs.
Another giant thank you to: Prairie Dog Coalition, Wild Earth Protectors, 3 CSU Students, City of Northglenn and the City's Animal Control, Pests Controllers and 2 Adams Five Star School employees. We couldn't have done it without your input. Also, a thank you to Ms. Pattye and Spencer (our intern) for setting up and recording our PBL's via UStream! Last, but not least a thank you to Tracey Calderon for helping us organize the day, speaking to our class, and contacting our panelist! Wow...so many people to thank for such an amazing learning opportunity.

Dear Families and Friends,
The snow arrived and we are relieved that the field trip was postponed. It turned out to be a very wise call! We are still working on getting the buses, the camp site, Keystone facilitators, and all of the other necessities for an excursion like this re-coordinated. We will let you know when the next attempt at the trip will be so we can plan ahead. So far, it appears that it will happen sometime in early March. We will keep you informed as soon as we know.
Second grade is deeply into their research for their PBLs. They are learning how to save information to a folder on-line and also how to put together a Prezi presentation for their PBLs. Students in second grade will also begin researching a Colorado animal. Watch for the grading rubric to be included on this site early next week.
Students have been creating diamante poems in Mrs. Tennant's class this week and Ms. Logan's class will be doing the same next week. These lovely "works of art" will be published and up for viewing at STEM once they are completed.
With the kick-off of our research reports, we will be learning about expository writing, separating opinion from fact, and how to stay on topic. Presentation of the writing will be evaluated, along with content. We will be completing these by February 21st.
We hope you and your family enjoy this beautiful snow and stay safe!

*Remember your student should be bringing home their reading book daily and summarizing what they have read in their reading journals.
* We are beginning to work with mulitplication; a set of old fashioned flash cards is a truly phenomenal way to get these facts memorized. Just a few minutes a day of practice can make a huge difference!
* Your student will need to look "professional" for their PBL on February 12th. These will be presented for parents at 6:30-8:00pm on that day.
*A special shout-out to Mrs. Schmuck for creating our fabulous name tags! These will be worn by the students during their PBLs to assist them in looking their "professional best"!
Notice: Our field trip for Thursday to Empire at the Easter Seals Camp with Keystone Science School has been postponed until further notice due to weather conditions. Thank you for all of the forms and all of your patience! We will keep you posted and share with you as soon as we know when we will be going. Again we apologize and we are very disappointed ourselves, but safety of our students must be first!
Remember: Regular day tomorrow...please do not come early!
Thank You,
Ms. Logan and Mrs. Tennant

We are so happy about our upcoming excursion to Empire (just outside of Georgetown) at the Easter Seals Camp. Our students will be taught by the Keystone Science School teachers and we will be taking up our own, Ms. Geerdes(our Enrichment Teacher), Mrs. S. (our Art Teacher), Tracey Calderon (STEM Coordinator), Dr. Karen Johnson (District Science Coordinator)!!! A giant THANK YOU to our PTO and Indira Douglas who gave us a Solar City grant that enabled us to stay longer, take a charter bus and lower your cost from $50 down to $33!!! We cannot believe the help we have received. We do have a few students who do need help funding, so if you are willing to donate please talk to Julie Yamasaki to help those in need and experience this amazing Snow Science Excursion. This is truly once in a lifetime experience that is truly amazing! Your bill for this was in PayforIt during the First Semester. However, we will be adding Camp Tahosa to the Second Semester bill.
Your child will be provided with snow shoes, journal, hands-on experience digging out a snow pit, seeing the layers within the snow, taking out a core sample and seeing the different equivalencies from a solid to a liquid, just to name a few.
We also met with City of Northglenn and they are very excited and wiling to help on many levels our Community Garden. We will have a raised garden and we will be allowed to build a wall around it using our knowledge gained from our Materials Engineering! Everything is truly coming together! We will keep you in the loop. This garden will provide food to our community members in need. We will need your help in the summer to keep it weed free and harvested! CSU Master Gardener's will be helping us along with the City. The students will be researching what plants grow best in Colorado and provide fresh produce for those in need. We will also be working with The Jane Goodall Institute: Roots and Shoots!!! As you can tell this is an extraordinary project! If you are willing to help wood, soil, brick, etc. please let us know.
Serving You,

Wow...our last 4 days and then we have officially finished our 1st semester! We have been amazed as we have been assessing your child on the growth that they are making! Congrats to all of you for helping us reach these goals that the children set. If your child did not make the growth that was needed please take the time to talk to your child and see why they are not. We will be reflecting also and making a new plan for a new year...2014!
Both classes will be working on matter in Science this week and tagging onto our materials engineering unit of study with new learning from cooking experiments and our holiday present that they are making for you! We call this "Learning in Action"!

Thank you first of all for attending our Fairy Tale Re-Play! What a success! We were so proud and it was just wonderful having all of you there! Your kids were just beautiful and we are definitely thankful for you and your child! Please send any photos that you have from that night so we can capture it all in one presentation! Also, we loved having the wonderful desserts with you afterwards! Everyone was so happy and it was fun to be together just enjoying one another.
What an eye-opening experience it was to see first hand what happens to our recycled items. A big thank you to Metech for taking the time to learn about the human impact and the adaptations people are trying to make to preserve our natural resources. This company truly cares about what is happening to our waste and trying to make a difference. Our lunch at KFC was a sight to see and the management and our parent volunteers were just fabulous with serving, cleaning and in general just being so kind to all of the students. It was so fun to see us take over KFC’s lobby!!! Beginning this week we will begin mid year assessments. We will do the MAPS testing in Math and Reading. Then on this last Monday on assessment day, we gave the PALS test and Writing Assessment. We will be sharing our results as soon as we finish up.
Our trip to Camp Tahosa today was amazing! We saw how the last few months all tied together for our erosion unit! The staff could not give us enough compliments about how much our students knew. They said, "Your students sound like 5th graders talking!" We are so proud of them! Please be looking for some photos from our great day posted on Twitter and Facebook by this weekend. We got to go sledding to demonstrate how erosion begins and how it moves so fast and takes other items with it. We also measured the speed of wind and saw how it erodes on our hike by the lake. Next, we got to work with snow and earth materials to see how it moves and erodes our Earth! It was a fabulous trip...again thank you! Plus, a giant thank you to Ms. Calderon for organizing this for us!

Student Leadership wants to thank you for your unbelievable support! Thank you to all of the families who donated goodies for our movie night and middle school dance. Both events were a HUGE success and couldn't have been done without you. It was so nice that you had your children participate. Also, the plant sale went incredibly well for the short time that we were able to offer them. With the monies earned from these past events we will begin to purchase STEM spirit items for our building. Again, thank you! Yours Truly, Student Leadership

We are working on our plays and we have realized that many of you may not be clear about this play. It is a game show setting with Rapunzel and Cinderella as the contestants. The show is hosted by Sleeping Beauty and the Grimm Brothers ask the questions about the little vignettes that will be happening throughout the play. That means that there is one overarching play with 2 Reader's Theatre Play's, 4 songs, 2 stories with puppeteers, and of course stage directors, sound and audio. Please help by practicing with your child at home. We will be practicing in class and we have either sent a hard copy or have emailed you the play. It is a fractured fairy tale and is quite humorous. If you can help Friday the 22nd or Monday the 25th with the backdrop please let us know or just come on in. We will welcome any help.
Our Student Leaders are selling Poinsettia's and/or Christmas Cactus Plants until Monday, Nov. 18th. They are $12.50 a piece and STEM's Student Leadership gets to keep $5.00 from every plant. This money will help us buy some rugs or flags with our school mascot/name on it! Please contact your child's classroom student leader or contact the teacher to purchase these beautiful plants. Delivery is Dec. 5th! Please write check out to STEM Lab PTO.

We have assigned all of the parts for our Fairy Tale Play for Tuesday night Nov. 26th from 6:30-8:00 p.m. To celebrate we thought we could have a dessert potluck afterwards! Please understand that we have made sure that all students will have a part within the evening...everything from backdrops, props, music, sign walkers, speaking parts, etc. 2nd grade does this play together and some of our "practice" time may be during their reading group time. Please be patient with books as they should come home but may not depending on time allotment. Please know that we will also be performing this play to the 1st grade classes. We will record it through UStream again and keep you posted on the time frame. Go 2nd Grade!!!
The students have begun working on their own Fractured Fairy Tale within a narrative format. We have attached a rubric of what we will be teaching and assessing. We will also have the students put these into a digital story format using StoryBird or MS Word. Please realize that we will be going through the writing process which means it will take us 2 weeks to get from their drafts, then editing, revising, and then publishing.

Wow! A giant thank you to John Patricolo and Dan Szabo for putting all of the catapults together! We had to make sure the students would be able to start the reverse engineering process of taking an item that is together, taking it apart and then putting it back together. The students inspected, analyzed, hypothesized how the catapult is put together. Learned the names of all the hardware parts and then drew an isometric view of the catapult. Then, the students started taking apart the catapults with screwdrivers, drills, and pure determination. We will be rebuilding the catapults this week and have a couple practice launches with baseballs to work on their distance, trajectory and learning how to use the variables of the catapult.
Halloween will be super fun in that many of the parents are organizing Halloween Science experiments along with our catapulting teams launching their pumpkins out in the field behind our school. We will begin rotations at 1:00-2:30. Students are allowed to wear costumes, but please realize that they will be getting their hands dirty with experiments, running to get their pumpkins, plus bending and twisting the afternoon away!
We will begin working on our Reader’s Theatre using Fractured Fairy Tales as our genre for our projected date of performance Tuesday, November 26th at 6pm. Please put on your calendar as a tentative date to come and enjoy an evening together. We will have a dessert potluck afterwards to enjoy some time together and realize how thankful we all are to have each other.

We are looking forward to our reverse engineering process with our catapults! We set the stage by building a cork catapult and finishing up our stapler remover catapults. We will be launching on Halloween between 1:00-2:30! We will be having a Pumpkin Chunkin’ Festival! Teams will gather to launch, hurtl, and catapult their pumpkins in several categories to see who launches the farthest and most accurate. If your child would like to wear their costume this day they may but please be aware of the activities, we sure don’t want anyone’s costume ruined before they get to go out trick-or-treating! We would like each child to bring a pumpkin that will fit in the base of 2 liter soda bottle. Also, you are welcome to join us! A giant thank you to Dan Szabo, John Patricolo, Ron Lampo, and Terry Boon for helping get the catapults together before the students take them apart.
We are beginning our next unit with Fairy Tales. Please share your favorites. Also, be watching calendar for our production of our fractured play of fairy tales. We are publishing our letters to the mayor of Northglenn in hopes of donating land southwest of the school right by the tennis courts for a community garden. We have been working on format, punctuation and conjunctions. They are also using a Web 2.0 tool Voki to write a thank you to Louie Clemmons who was a guest speaker last week kicking-off our catapult unit. In this Voki we are looking at setting, reality of avatar, variety of punctuation marks, sentence structure, greeting and closure of Voki.
Don't forget that this Friday, Oct. 25th is our Trunk or Treat that is hosted by PTO. Please click on link to help in some capacity! This is a family event and it is FREE...time is 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.

Thank you for meeting with us this week for conferences. It is always encouraging to meet with you and learn more about your child. Thank you so much for your time.
We are looking forward to our catapult building in Engineering! We will be utilizing the Reverse Engineering Design Process in this project that was developed in conjunction with Colorado School of Mines engineering students the last 2 years. We will be taking apart the catapults and then rebuilding the catapult through their drawings and correlations of the numbers and letters. We will be working on these catapults for the next 2 1/2 weeks and building other smaller models from RAFT (a recycling resource store for teachers) to learn about potential and kinetic energy. We are so excited to be taking this learning experience to another level. We will be launching on Halloween, Oct. 31st from 1:30-3:00! Please free to join us on the back lawn between STEM Lab and Hulstrom. Please let us know if you can provide small pie sized pumpkins that would fit into the bottom a 2 liter soda bottle.
Thank You!

St. Mary’s Glacier was so amazing! The weather was beautiful, supervision was high, learning was real and above all we were together as a group! Thank you again to everyone who helped with this excursion: parents, Dr. Mike Marlow, Tracey Calderon, etc. We will be continuing our learning about landforms and their effect on our ecosystem.
Speaking of landforms...Monday is our big trip to Red Rocks Amphitheatre! We will be learning about the geological phenomena, the history of the infamous artist who have performed on this stage, we will also have the students sing “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles, “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong and a song from Dr. Cannady. Also, during this excursion we will be taking photos and keeping the “A” (art) alive within STEM! We will teach them how to take triptychs and then Red Rocks actually is having a photography contest, so we will be submitting some if not all photos taken. Please feel free to join us. Just remember there is a fee for parents.
The bus will leave from STEM at 9:00 am and we will return by 2:00. Please do not forget to have sunscreen, bug spray, layers of clothing, a sack lunch and other necessities for our outdoor adventure! We will be taking photographs for our project, please send in a camera or device that has an SD card or a USB that we can download from. If you do not have a camera we can share and have iPod’s they can use. Don’t forget a sack lunch, sunscreen, layered clothing, and other necessities for outdoor adventures! Your child’s field trip fee will be assessed in IC and you can pay in Oct. You will be able to pay all at once using the PayForIt system at that time or in increments through the office during the year!
This Saturday is our exclusive viewing for our 2nd Grade classrooms at the Denver Pavilions. We will be seeing the DaVinci and Michelangelo Exhibit. Please meet us outside at 9:15 am. The cost is $7 per person. Please feel free to bring family and friends! We are excited to be a part of something so magnificent!

Dear Families and Friends,
Wow! What a wonderful group of kids and parents!!! Thank you to everyone who made time in your busy schedules to come out
for Parent Assessment Information Night. Our hope is that we were able to clarify some of your questions and that you have a better grasp of where your child is academically and where we need to be by May.
We want to share with you an example of an opinion piece writing sample for second grade. The link will show you what a “3” or
“Proficient” paper should address, the grading rubric, and a benchmark checklist for the year. Please click on the link to better understand our
emphasis on writing this year. If you have questions about your child’s writing, we will be happy to address those at parent conferences.
Our STEM second graders have a very exciting and fun week ahead. On Tuesday, September 24th, we will be heading for St. Mary’s Glacier to view the erosion process, observe the changes in matter from solids to liquids, and the effects of changes on the environment. Saturday, September 28th, all families may join us at The Pavilions in Denver at 9:15 am, for a morning of learning and exploration of the amazing Michelangelo and Da Vinci Exhibit.
The museum is opening early for our group, along with giving us a discounted $7.00 ticket fee, so please come and join us for this fantastic
opportunity. Monday, September 30th, we are off to Red Rocks Amphitheatre for a day of hiking, performing, observing, creating, and enjoying the beauty of this natural treasure in our “own backyard”. We have some special events lined up there for our visit and it should be loads of learning and fun!
Just a reminder….homework is for practice of skills taught during class. The more practice your child participates in, the better they will do on
their Standards-Based Assessments. Homework is not counted for grades and practice is optional for all students. Optional due dates are posted on the calendar.

Speaking of opportunities, we originally had asked to go to Red Rocks in November but the park is closed for tours Oct. 1st. When our STEM coordinator, Tracy Calderon, expressed how and what we were thinking about doing, they opened up their calendar for us to go to Red Rocks Amphitheater on Monday, September 30th. We are so excited about the many learning opportunities during this excursion! We will get a private guided tour and learn about the geological history of this incredible landform and also the musical history. We are going to also, ready…drum roll... get to tour the backstage area AND sing a song on the stage of RED ROCKS, which was recently voted the #1 venue in the United States!!! We will be figuring out how to stream and/or record live so that if you are unable to attend you can watch us live or watch at your leisure. Please look for the form in your child’s Friday Folder and again the cost will come at a later date once our October count is done. The cost is looking around $3 for students for RED Rocks and then an additional $5 for the bus. Speaking of the calendar, we have Picture Day next Friday (see insert in Friday folder for options). Also, please make sure we have your permission slip for St. Mary’s Glacier. The fee for all field trips will be assessed later in IC. Just an FYI this trip will be billed to you at $15 per child. Please let us know if you need help or can help with the cost.
In addition, we are about to kick off our Structural and Civil Engineering at The DaVinci Machines and Michelangelo Exhibition at the Denver Pavilions (500 16th Street in Denver) on Saturday, September 28th! We will meet as a group outside at 9:15am and the teachers will collect $7 per person. We will enter as a group at 9:30am so that we get the discount. They are opening it up to our 2 classrooms exclusively and this is an amazing opportunity. This activity is not mandated, just invited! Of course, we would love to have everyone join us for the outstanding learning experience. (Parents must accompany their child during our visit to the Pavilion). Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
